Nobody gets more excited about the arrival of spring like our dogs. Cooped up during the winter, they practically launch out of our homes like cannonballs as soon as they can see the grass. However, the fleas and ticks lurking in the grass and plants seize the opportunity to attack our beloved pups. Perfect Pooch is your guide when it comes to protecting our four-legged companions from harmful insects this spring and summer.

While both fleas and ticks are harmful to your dog, there are differences between them. Fleas are weaker than ticks. Ticks can burrow their way into the dog’s skin, where they are free to not only spread diseases, but also cause extreme discomfort. They can infect your dog’s bloodstream and transfer anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Lyme Disease, and other harmful diseases. Here are a few things you can do to prevent this from happening to your dog:

Keep Your Lawn Short
Keeping your lawn short gives ticks and fleas with fewer places to nest. Pests typically like thicker vegetation and plants to hide in, and fleas and ticks are no exception. This also includes eliminating weeds and keeping plants trimmed. Ticks and fleas like to perch themselves on taller vegetation and spring onto their prey when they get the chance, so eliminating these elements in your yard takes their advantage away.

Check Their Fur
For a more hands-on approach, checking your dog after each walk is a good idea. The task is admittedly more difficult depending on the breed and size, but with a pair of gloves go through your dog’s fur all the way to the skin and check for ticks and fleas. If you do happen to find a pest, removing them can be tricky. Ticks will burrow their way underneath your dog’s skin, leaving only their bodies exposed. Using a pair of tweezers and gently, but persistently, pull as much of the tick out as you can. If the head remains, it is important to leave it. Irritating the skin around the area can lead to infections and the dog’s body will inevitably push the head out.

Select A Medication
For the best possible protection, Frontline and K9 Advantix have been proven to guard against ticks and fleas the best. Once given to your dog, they should be protected for the whole season.
